Health Enabling Technologies in Braunschweig – Private Diagnostic Spaces
As part of HiGHmed's joint teaching and training program, the Peter L. Reichertz Institute (PLRI) for Medical Informatics has developed the innovative e-learning module entitled “Health Enabling Technologies and Data”. Health Enabling Technologies (HET), as a category, comprises all technologies that systematically process data about an individual's state of health, to maintain or improve it. These technologies can be implemented in private diagnostic spaces – at home, in a vehicle, etc. – to record biomedical signals from the human body, such as heart rate or respiratory rate.
The use of Health Enabling Technologies in private diagnostic spaces presents challenges in both data collection and analysis. Variations in the placement of the recorder, background vibrations, and patient behavior can result in problems like poor signal-to-noise ratio, shifting offsets, and data gaps. In addition to the difficulties in signal processing and analysis, the large volume of data requires robust algorithms for automated analysis for staff to understand and interpret the measurements.
The “Health Enabling Technologies and Data” course at the PLRI covers all aspects of HET usage described above, to better prepare for digital integration in healthcare. The module uses Python with a practical focus on the processing of HET signals. Topics include the basics of semantic interoperability, the evaluation of algorithms, and model-based methodology for real-time monitoring and emergency detection. By offering the course online, students can participate at a location and time convenient to them.
